                  PTE Score Chart & Calculator

Understanding your PTE score is important when preparing for study, work, migration or other English-language requirements. The PTE score chart helps you understand the score scale, skill scores and English proficiency levels, while a PTE score calculator can help you review your practice performance and identify areas that need improvement.

PTE Academic reports an overall score and four communicative skill scores: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. Scores are reported on a scale from 10 to 90. However, the official PTE overall score is not calculated by simply averaging these four skill scores. Pearson explains that the overall result considers performance across the test, including question scores, difficulty and weighting.

                    PTE Score Chart

The PTE Academic score chart provides a general way to understand your English proficiency. Pearson aligns PTE Academic scores with the Global Scale of English (GSE) and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

                      PTE Academic Score

PTE Academic ScoreCEFR LevelGeneral Proficiency Level
                      85–90C2Very high proficiency
76–84C1Advanced proficiency (Common target for 79+)
                      59–75B2Upper-intermediate proficiency (Target for 65+)
                      43–58B1Intermediate proficiency (Target for 50+)
                      30–42A2Elementary proficiency
                      10–29A1Beginner level

These score ranges provide a standardized guide to understanding your English proficiency. Pearson's published score alignment materials demonstrate that CEFR bands can overlap because the relationship between test performance and communicative proficiency is evaluated comprehensively across integrated tasks.

PTE Score Scale: 10 to 90

PTE Academic uses a numerical scale from 10 to 90, with 90 being the highest possible score. Your Score Report provides your overall score as well as scores for Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing.

The four communicative skill scores are also reported on a 10–90 scale. Some PTE tasks assess more than one skill, so the performance on integrated tasks can contribute to multiple communicative skill scores.

                          PTE Score 90

A score of 90 is the top of the PTE Academic score scale. It represents very high English proficiency.

                            PTE Score 79

A score of 79 falls within Pearson's C1 range. Students targeting 79 should prepare across all four skills and practise the specific PTE question types regularly.

A target score should always be considered alongside the requirements of the university, employer, professional body or visa authority you are applying to.

                              PTE Score 65

A score around 65 falls within the B2 range. It indicates performance within the upper-intermediate CEFR level according to Pearson's published alignment.

                                PTE Score 50

A score around 50 falls within the B1 range in Pearson's current score alignment materials. Your individual skill scores can provide additional information about where your strengths and weaknesses are.

                                  PTE Score Calculator

A PTE score calculator can be useful during preparation, but it is important to understand what it can and cannot calculate.

You can enter your practice scores for:

This can help you compare your practice performance and identify which skills require more preparation.

However, an online calculator should not claim to reproduce the official PTE overall-score calculation by averaging the four skill scores. Pearson specifically states that the official overall score is not a simple average of Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing.

                                  • Listening
                                  • Reading
                                  • Speaking
                                  • Writing

                                  Example Practice Score Review

Suppose your diagnostic or recent mock test practice results are:

                                  Skill AreaExample Practice Score
                                  Listening78
                                  Reading74
                                  Speaking81
                                  Writing76

A simple mathematical average would show 77.25. However, this should not be considered your official PTE overall score. The official PTE overall score is calculated from performance across the entire exam, factoring in question difficulty, item weighting, and integrated skills where tasks contribute simultaneously to multiple skill scores.

                                    PTE Listening Score

The PTE Listening score is reported on the same 10–90 scale.

Your Listening performance is assessed through different question types, including tasks such as:

Regular listening practice can help you improve comprehension, note-taking, spelling and accuracy.

The PTE Reading score is also reported from 10 to 90.

Reading preparation can include practice with:

Focus on understanding context rather than relying only on individual words.

The PTE Speaking score is reported from 10 to 90.

                                    Speaking preparation should focus on:

Practising tasks such as Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image and other Speaking & Writing question types can help you become more familiar with the test format.

The PTE Writing score is also measured on a 10–90 scale.

                                    Writing preparation can include:

When practising, focus on answering the task correctly while maintaining clear and accurate English.

If you use an online PTE mock test, record your results after each practice session.

                                        For example:

                                          Practice Test 1

                                          • Listening: 62
                                          • Reading: 65

Instead of focusing only on an estimated overall number, compare the individual skill results and identify the areas showing improvement.

How to Improve Your PTE Score

If your practice score is below your target, create a structured preparation plan.

Review your Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing practice results. Identify which skills require the most attention.

Do not rely only on full mock tests. Practise individual question types so you can understand the requirements of each task.

PTE is a computer-based test with strict time limits. Include timed practice in your preparation.

After every practice session, record the questions you answered incorrectly and determine why you made each mistake.

Full mock tests help you practise concentration, timing and switching between different question types.

Maintain a record of your practice scores. Comparing results over several tests can help you identify patterns in your preparation.
